A study was conducted to investigate the role of existing natural drains in combating waterlogging, and determine the extent of waterlogging in Spaira Ragha Plain, Pakistan under varying recharge, soil profile depth and natural drains depth using MODFLOW modelling. Results indicated that a large part of the area is liable to become waterlogged within the five years of canal irrigation system. The waterlogging in the study area is very much dependent on recharge rate. Deepening the existing drains has minimal effect on combating waterlogging. It is suggested that the recharge rate should be reduced by effective water management. The provision of subsurface drainage is provided and remodelling of the existing drains should be done.
