Severe chronic unilateral granulomatous pneumonia in a caged layer flockassociated with Pasteurella gallinarum

A case of naturally occurringsevere chronic unilateral granulomatous pneumonia in caged layer flocks infectedby Pasteurella gallinarum in reported. Birds showed declining egg production,sneezing and dyspnea. At necropsy severe unilateral consolidation of the lung withairsacculitis and hydrosalpinx were observed. Liver, heart, pancreas, brain andintestines were severely congested. Microscopically, granulomatous lesions wereobserved in the affected lungs with severe lymphocytolysis in follicles of the bursaof Fabricius and spleen. Salpingitis, acute focal tubulointerstitial nephritis andsevere granulomatous myositis were also observed. Pasteurella gallinarum wasisolated from affected lungs. Mycobacterium or fungal hyphae were not detectedwith contact smears even with specific staining. Results suggest thatgranulomatous lesions may have been induced by P. gallinarum but complicatedby Escherichia coli and Mycoplasma gallisepticum infection.
