Four lines and five testers along with twenty crosses obtained by crossing these parents were used for studying the path analysis of yield and yield attributing characters in rice. Number of productive tillers plant had high positive direct effect onyield followed by days to fifty per cent flowering, plant height, grains panicle, plant height and 100 grain weight, thus indicating that the improvement of these traits increases the grain yield in early x very early lines of rice. Grain yield in rice is a trait governed by polygenes. A knowledge of the association between yield and its component characters and the component characters themselves can improve the efficiency of selection because in a complex situation, selection for an optimum feature should be based on judiciously computed index. In such a situation, studies on path analysis prove to be an effective tool for partitioning the correlation co-efficient into direct and indirect effects of component characters.
