Diagnostic Imaging, Angiography, and Interventional Techniques for Jugular Foramen Tumors

Among tumors of the skull base, those originating within the jugular foramen are uncommon and of these paraganglio-mas (glomus jugulare), schwannomas, and meningiomas are the most common histologic types.9 Hemangiopericytomas, ex-tramedullary plasmacytomas, giant cell tumors, chondrosarco-mas, lipomas, chordomas, and primitive neuroectodermal tumors are among the tumors that have been less frequently reported in the literature as arising either within or in the "vicinity" of the jugular foramen..1"9 Other than noting that hemangiopericytomas, plasmacytomas, and giant cell tumors may mimic paragangliomas with respect to radiographic, angiographic, and clinical findings, a detailed discussion of these exceptionally uncommon primary jugular foramen lesions offers little additional practical information.8'9 From the perspective of radio-logic diagnosis and intervention, an examination of the three most common jugular foramen tumors provides the most useful insight, given their distinctive features on croSS-sectional images and angiography.
