Canada’s new foreign minister, John Baird, will travel to Beijing next week to meet with his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi, as well as executives at China National Petroleum Corporation, the parent company of PetroChina, whose C$5.4 billion ($US5.6 billion) shale gas deal with Calgary-based Encana collapsed last month (OD Jun.22’11). Baird’s main goal in his first major overseas visit is to double Canada’s exports to China — which currently stand at C$12.8 billion a year compared with Chinese imports to Canada of C$44.4 billion a year — by 2015.
