Thoughts on the conservation status of forest habitats - example of the France-Comte area.

Because no methodology has been devised to assess the conservation status of local forest habitats, various sometimes costly or non-reproducible methods have been implemented in Franche-Comte. Many issues arise as to how to define the standard of reference, whether or not naturalness parameters should be considered (old wood, dead wood, etc.), the scale of perception and the typicality of the classes. A minimum requirement is to use conventional forest planner tools to achieve uniform practices and reduce mapping costs. Existing site maps can thus be enhanced and matched against forest stand maps.
