The carbon black industry has been using a term known as "structure" since the 1940s to describe one of the most important properties of carbon black. Structure, a term that describes the fusion of primary particles that make up aggregates of carbon black, strongly affects the properties of filled rubber compounds, including processability and reinforcement. In the early 1960s, carbon black structure was direetly estimated using a manual oil absorption method borrowed from the coatings industry, and a compression method that was proposed as a quality control test by Medalia (ref. 1). In addition, structure measurements based on compound extrusion shrinkage were widely used at this time.
