The inventive qualities potters bring to throwing often reveals new and different ways of working. Emily Myers, a consummate, careful thrower, is perhaps best known for her tall, ziggurat shapes and neat, crisply thrown, Lidded containers with playful knobs, the forms and decoration highlighted by a range of matt glazes that has included a vibrant electric blue. In her more recent pieces, whilst still retaining the domestic scale, Myers has moved away from this more hard-edged approach to a softer, more sensual use of the thrown form. In this new body of work, Myers has most notably concentrated on the thrown bottle shape by easing it into a flattened form, and on some pieces creating a rounded base. The effect is surprisingly light, in that the bottle is elevated and almost appears to float on the surface on which it stands.
