One of the most effective methods for processing the nickel concentrate from finematte separation is chlorine leaching. This process yields a precipitate containing copper sulfide and elemental sulfur. There are various ways of processing this semi-product. In the conditions of AO Kombinat Severonikel' [Joint/Stock Society Northern Nickel Kombinat] one of the effective methods is the processing of the nickel concentrate in an autogenous furnace together with the copper concentrate from the finematte separation process. In this case practically ass the valuable components that are present in the leach precipitate are concentrated in the "raw" blister copper, and then - after refining - in the anode copper. In this process the elemental sulfur will be practically completely oxidized to SO_2. This sulfur dioxide is used together with the primary furnace gas stream in the production of sulfuric acid. Incomplete oxidation of the sulfur may lead to its partial sublimation with condensation in the gas ducting.The objective of the present work was to analyze the feasibility of post-combustion of the elemental sulfur in an autogeneous melting furnace. The scheme of the furnace is shown in Fig. 1.
