The liberals are cheering, the greens are appalled, and the business lobby can give itself a pat on the back. The EU now wants to come to the aid of industry - which is fearing for its competitiveness in the face of rising energy prices - with an energy policy U-turn. The supply of affordable and sustainable energy is extremely important for Europe's economies, states a draft negotiated in Brussels. No specific measures for reducing energy prices are underway as yet - the EU Commission is simply setting out to present an analysis of the price drivers in the energy sector by the end of the year. It has to be doubted whether this will take us any further, but one can already vaguely sense that the EU is moving away from the climate pact that it forged with such loud fanfare, and also from the efficiency targets agreed on in the Community. The industry associations' laments have thus had an impact after all.
