THE BUGATTI VEYRON is the only Fastest Car Ever to be welcomed by enthusiasts with a loud, wet raspberry. It's too heavy, Internet trolls said. It's not pretty enough, armchair aesthetes complained. It's too expensive, everybody whined. Haters gonna hate, but as usual, they were hatin' on what they didn't understand. And certainly couldn't afford. McLaren Fl designer Gordon Murray was a hater, too, at least until he drove a $1.5 million Veyron for the January 2006 issue of R&T. Then he seemed to understand the philosophical significance of the car. "I have always felt a little responsible for starting this lunatic chase for top speed with the McLaren Fl," he wrote, "and the Bugatti Veyron should put an end to this nonsense."
