During my year of surgical fellowship, I attended the Wills Retina Club meeting for the first time. Partly into the morning session, a case with exuberant swelling and growth of the optic disks was presented. Larry was moderating the meeting and called on me to discuss the resemblance of the case to one that Don Gass had presented at the Macula Society meeting the year before. Note that I had met Dr. Yannuzzi for the first time that morning. Over the course of the day, I watched in amazement the ability of this man to recall cases that people had presented, published, or sought his opinion, based on which he called upon several members of the audience to comment and join in the discussion. Over the next decade and a half that I have come to know him, this unique ability has been the "highlight" of every meeting I have been to. His wide knowledge of the subject and natural ability to respond with rhetoric is the hallmark of the case conferences he chairs. His sharp, crisp, and succinct summaries of the presentation are "pearls" that the audience tucks away in their memory.
