REUSABLE SUTURELESS SILICONE RING FOR HOUSING CONTACT LENS DURING VITREO-RETINAL SURGERY

The use of corneal contact lens during vitreous surgery has been popular because it affords excellent visualization of the fundus.1 The viewing systems have evolved from the traditional irrigating lens system to the use of contact lens which is placed in a sutured metal ring.2 The sutures used to secure the ring have the potential to cause bleeding, which can accumulate between the contact lens and the cornea and obscure the surgeon's view. There is also a possibility of globe perforation. Previously we described the use of self-stabilized contact lens with foot plates, which provides well-centered view of the fundus without the help of a ring.3 However, the design of the self-stabilized lens is limited and not available for the various lenses used. Alternatively, the contact lens can be placed in a self-retaining silicone ring that does not require sutures to hold it in place. In this report, we describe the use of a newly designed silicone ring as an alternative to the sutured metal ring to retain contact lens during vitreo-retinal procedures.
