During the early days of vitreous surgery, a Gold-mann planoconcave (flat) lens that simply rested on a methylcellulose-coated corneal surface was used for posterior segment visualization.1 The lens was later modified by the addition of a suction tube and an irrigation system in an attempt to increase its corneal adherence and decrease corneal damage.1 Both self-retaining and handheld lens systems of this type were eventually made available. Techniques using suture fixation of either a lens or a lens ring to the globe were developed to provide further stability during vitreor-etinal surgery.23 Self-retaining sutureless systems requiring the purchase of special contact lenses or separate lens rings have also been described.4"8 In addition, several systems specific to wide-angle viewing systems have been introduced for peripheral visualization, some of which require no corneal contact.
