The controlled transmission of light is important in areas such as optical waveguides, where the signal loss over distances needs to be minimised. Fabrication of the quartz and glass materials used traditionally can be inconvenient and often involve inefficient high temperature processes. A solution to this problem is to use a cured silicone composition to produce a suitable waveguide.
