The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) introduced its first postprimary certification program in 1991. The cardiovascular-interventional (Cl) technology program (later separated into cardiac-interventional radiography and vascular-interventional radiography) was the result of 7 years of development work. As ARRT's first postprimary certification, a number of hurdles had to be cleared. Each of the 12 postprimary certification programs subsequently produced over the following 14 years took considerably less time because we followed the model for the cardiovascular-interventional technology certification. However, the postprimary certification model has evolved over the years.
