Toronto, ON - The City of Toronto has assured Michigan legislators that solid waste shipments to that state will be eliminated by 2010. Responding to public concerns, Michigan is working toward legislating against the disposal of Canadian waste in Michigan landfills. The bulk of this is made up of Toronto's residual solid waste, currently being trucked to Carlton Farms Landfill in Sumpter Township. Angelos Bacopoulos, General Manager of Toronto's Solid Waste Management Services division, and its Director of Policy and Planning, Geoff Rathbone, testifying before the Michigan Senate Committee on Environmental Affairs, gave assurances that the amount of waste bound for Michigan would start declining in 2004.
