In recent years, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) are widely used as the drive unit for servo system of NC machine tool. However, the motors are required to have perfect dynamic performance. It is very important to predict the characteristic of noise and vibration which are key appraisal indexes of the design of high performance motor. With the help of advanced computer and developed algorithm method, it becomes possible to realize it. This work presents an approach to calculating the distribution of electromagnetic force density in airgap and the modal shapes of the motor using finite element method. Furthermore, the acoustic field analysis is fulfilled in order to obtain the emitted process of the noise from PMSM. The effects of changing closed slot opening pattern on radiated sound pressure level of the motor are calculated. By changing the slot opening patterns, the noise of the motor is reduced.
