A childhood experience of living at Welbeck Abbey near Sherwood Forest in the 1940s has played an enormously influential role in Elizabeth Jenkins' life. And, some sixty years later, her Okuti Valley home near Christchurch also alludes strongly to thequintessential English cottage of her very youngest years. "My English childhood made a huge impression on me and, when I found this piece of land in 1995,1 knew it was the perfect place to develop my vision," she says. She called her sheltered 0.8-hectare paradise Welbeck. "It's beside a stream and teck' is a northern English term for stream, plus I have a well here for my water. Given my childhood memories, it seemed the perfect name."
