A review of the effectiveness of the clinical informaticist role

The healthcare sector is increasing its use of information management and technology (IM&T) and e-health. However, this needs to be led by healthcare professionals with the appropriate skills to ensure that these developments are suitable for use in a clinical setting and provide enhanced delivery of care to patients and the public. This article describes the development of two clinical informaticist posts to support the delivery of IM&T initiatives, and the effects of these new roles. The article aims to raise the profile of the clinical informaticist role, and to encourage the introduction of similar roles within local health and social care organisations.
