As a staff nurse with limited knowledge of plaster cast management, this article identified the use of such casts to treat fractures, support and correct limb deformities, and provide pain relief.Plaster of Paris is frequently used because it is soft, light and easy to remove. I was not aware that a plaster of Paris cast can take as long as two days to dry out completely. During this time the patient should not weight bear.Complications associated with casts include allergic reactions, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE), infection, neurovascular deficit, pressure ulcers and compartment syndrome.The article emphasised the importance of neurovascular assessment of the lower limb to check whether it is being compromised as a result of the prolonged pressure of a cast reducing the blood supply. The article recommended that prophylactic measures are initiated to prevent DVT or PE. Neurovascular assessment involves close observations of the affected limbs. Accurate documentation recording the date and time of assessment is also essential.
