Role sparked new interest for me: Award winning nurse specialist Mark Sephton wants to inspire other nurses to apply for a Shire Innovation Fund grant

Being seconded to cover a colleague's maternity leave as a nurse specialist in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) sparked my interest in the specialty. That interest ultimately led me to apply for - and win - awards from the Shire Innovation Fund for IBD Nurses. My experience on medical assessment and endoscopy units stood me in good stead for my maternity coversecondmentatthe Countess of Chester Hospital. After spending many hours in an IBD clinic, I applied for my first specialist post at Liverpool's Aintree Hospital. There, I proved I could work autonomously and take on an advanced clinical role, while developing the service.
