Is there a place in the nursing workforce for nurse consultants? We asked our readers panel They bring benefits, but their role is too broad When Tony Blair announced the introduction of the nurse consultant role in 1998 it came as a surprise to everyone-evidence, perhaps, of NHS workforce 'planning'. The nurse consultants I have worked with are an inspiration and their leadership in their field is of great benefit to patients. They still have a place in the nursing workforce, but there are concerns about the role itself, which is too broad. It is asking a great deal to expect one individual to provide leadership, education and research, which is why some nurse consultants end up focusing on the area in which they feel most comfortable.
