Eighty per cent of ward sisters at Ealing Hospital NHS Trust in west London are from a black and minority ethnic background (BME). The trust is in the unusual position of having a nursing workforce that represents the population it serves, according to head of nursing for surgery and critical care Felicia Kwaku. Ms Kwaku says the high number of BME nurses in senior positions has been achieved by mentoring existing staff and discovering new talent. Ms Kwaku says she and another BME nurse, who are on band 8c, inspire other nurses to go for senior positions. She adds that the trust's nursing director and trust board are committed to equality, which is essential for achieving a culture that allows all staff to flourish.
