Nutritional status of institutionalised elderly in an old age home in Mysore City: dietary habits and food and nutrient intakes

A food and dietary intake survey was carried out on an institutionalized elderly population (45 men and 46 women, >=60 years old, grouped as 60-74 and >=75 years old). Energy consumption was inadequate in both sexes, and in women energy intakes were barely adequate to meet basal metabolism. Deficient intakes of protein were observed averaging 6-9 protein energy % in men and women. Consumption of visible fat was appreciably low in men and women. Protein and fat intakes from animal sources were much lower compared to plant sources. Among the vitamins, marked deficiencies in folic acid and vitamin B12 intakes were noted besides other water-soluble vitamins. Dietary deficiencies of Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn and Mg were observed. The Ca:P ratio of the diet was considerably altered to 1:2. All subjects in the older age group (>=75 years old) consumed <2/3 the RDA for Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu and Mn.
