Electronic measuring devices in potato grading.

The following three electronic measuring devices for potato grading were tested under field conditions: IRD by Techmark Inc. (USA), Smart Spud by Sensor Wireless Inc. (Canada) and PTR 200 by SM Engineering A/S (Denmark and Germany). The devices are described in detail, the measuring principles are explained and price quotes with web-addresses to order are given. The prices with software package range from 2500 Euro to 4000 Euro. For all devices under field conditions a wide range of comparative measurements are needed to adjust the results. Once adjusted, good data are produced helping to monitor mechanical stress for the tubers and fine-tune the grading equipment. It is concluded that with any of the devices, potato quality under field conditions can be increased and they should be used more widely.
