Row application of fertilizer in potatoes.

Potential advantages of row fertilization of potatoes are discussed. In field experiments near Schrobenhausen, Germany, during 1994-97, rows were fertilized with various concentrations of N, P2O5 and K2O at the same time as tubers of potato varietyPanda were place in the soil. Averaged over 4 years row fertilization resulted in yield increases of 41 dt/ha without significant changes in starch content or residual nitrogen in the soil after the harvest. Yield increases were particularly pronounced in years of low precipitation during May-September.
