Review of the 1999 new potato season: outlook: confidence in sprouting

Plantings of new potatoes in 1999 in Germany were somewhat later than in the previous year but within the normal range. Early supplies from southern Europe, which exceeded demand, pushed down prices and there were quality problems as a result of weather conditions. The first German crops at the end of May 1998 achieved prices only up to DM 58/dt as compared to up to DM 93 in the previous year. Trends in production and prices in different regions of Germany and throughout the EU are reviewed.
