Two thirds of all potatoes harvested in Germany go through some further processing, from crude sorting to eliminate undersize potatoes and loose packing, to cleaning and sorting by size and quality in quantities for retail sale. The performance of 4sieving systems with different designs and movements are compared as to the accuracy of their sorting, the rate of potato throughput and damage to potatoes. Differences in the systems were related more to movement of the sieves than to their gradient. Generally, those which sorted size most accurately were likely to cause the most damage to the potatoes. The assessment of individual systems must be assessed on the basis of both parameters and cannot be directly applied to individual sorting machines. Further technical development to improve quality is desirable.
