Early potatoes under fleece and plastic foil. A 3-year organic field trial.

In a 3-year field trial from 2005-07, organic early potato production was investigated with various crop covers. The trials were done at Waldhof research station, Fachhochschule Osnabruck, in Northern Germany. Three treatments were used on the early potato varieties Leyla and Rosara: fleece (17 g/m2), plastic foil (500 holes and 50 g/m2), and Wepelen Climatec (500 holes and 50 g/m2). Results showed higher yields with crop covers in every year. However, the difference was smaller depending on a warm spring. The most constant higher yields were achieved with the crop cover fleece (17 g/m2). The other two could have a negative effect in a warm spring by harming tuber quality.
