Static bath treatments with sodium percarbonate (a compound that releases hydrogen peroxide) and formaldehyde were tested for their effects on Gyrodactylus derjavini populations on rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. After 18 h of exposure to sodium percarbonate at concentrations at 80 mg/L or more, all ectoparasites were eradicated. Treatment with 40 mg/L produced a significant reduction of the parasite population. Exposure to formaldehyde at a concentration of 20 mg/L for 18 h eliminated the parasites, and treatments with 5 and 10 mg/L reduced them significantly. Our results suggest that sodium percarbonate is an alternative to formaldehyde for reducing G. derjavini populations on rainbow trout.
