Pruning is one of the highest art forms in horticulture - and a lot of hard work! But consider all those historic European gardens, with their immaculate pleached allees of trees and kitchen plots decorated wall to wall with gnarled old fruit treesbent into tunnels and splayed along brickwork. Despite the hard labour, who can deny that they look great? It's not all just for show, though. Hard pruning of fruit trees came about partly as a way to get maximum yields from a limited space. And in manyof today's urban gardens, that's the name of the game.
