BY FOCUSING ON SAFETY awareness, a mid-western steel company significantly improved its safety performance. The improvement in safety led to direct bottom-line results of reduced injury-frequency and -severity rates as well as reduced worker-compensation expenditures.During the early 1990s, the union-represented company experienced a series of serious and at times fatal injury-causing accidents. The experience not only seriously damaged its employee relations but also spilled over into the public-relations arena. Every ambulance run, whistle blow, or puff of steam would bring the news helicopters as well as OSHA to the facility. It was evident things had to change fast.
