Swift and sure: Perry Rogers

In 1900, Shady Side, Md., was a prime location for a busy and successful commercial boatyard. The town sits on a peninsula with Chesapeake Bay on one side and the West River on the other, nearly equidistant from Annapolis and Baltimore. Baltimore wasthe seafood center of Chesapeake Bay, and commercial fishing for crabs, oysters and finfish was a major part of Shady Side's economy. Building and repairing wooden boats supported those fisheries, which is why Perry Rogers' boatyard on Parrish Creek, near the mouth of the West River, was quite busy. The operation was a family affair, employing Rogers' brothers, Frank and Oliver, as well as his nephews, Porter, Benjamin, Leonard and Clarence.
