Independents Continue to Jostle For Position in Emerging Shales

Announcements by Chesapeake Energy, Devon Energy and EOG Kesources over the last two weeks have highlighted the asset recognition and rationalization challenges that North American independents continue to face as more and more shale gas and other unconventional plays crop up all across the US and Canada. With so many new plays becoming viable due to advances in horizontal drilling and completion techniques and high commodity prices, some companies have been forced to shed assets in order to focus on those plays with the highest rates of return (NGW Apr.7,p1).
