Being first in line does not always have its perks. Just ask Solyndra. The US solar panel manufacturer's recent bankruptcy, following a September 2009 $535 million loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy, has resulted in not only an investigation of the company but questioning over the government's role in financing renewable energy projects (NGW Sep.26'11).And government emails released by the House Energy and Commerce Committee's investigation show that in mid-2010, DOE was even on the brink of granting Solyndra a second loan of $469 million.
