Cheniere Changes Tack, Eyes Smaller LNG Plants in Glutted Market

Cheniere Energy, the leader of the "first wave" of Gulf Coast LNG mega-projects, is turning to the second wave with a shift in strategy and plans for downsizing its future liquefaction plants. The Houston company said in its third-quarter earnings report that it is evaluating "a mid-scale LNG solution," with a front-end engineering and design (Feed) contract with industry giants KBR, Siemens and Chart Industries. The study, expected to conclude in mid-2017, is assessing modular standardized LNG plants rather than the large-scale facilities it has developed thus far.
