Soil nutrients balance as influenced by enriched farm yard manure and fertilizer nitrogen levels in maize (Zea mays L.) production

Enrichment process substantially increased the P and N content of farm yard manure by 0.32 and 0.29 per cent, respectively. Grain and straw yields of maize and NPK uptake by the crop were significantly higher (27.2, 9.2, 4.6, 35.3 and 11.5 per cent respectively) with enriched farm yard manttre over conventional farmyard manure. Residual nutrient status was also significantly higher. Interaction effects of 4 or 8 t enriched farm yard manure per ha with 112.5 or 150kg fertilizer nitrogen per ha on grain yield, nutrient uptake and soil NPK status were significantly superior. Significant positive correlation of grain yield with NPK uptake was recorded. Soil available K after maize harvest declined (130.4 to 150.8 kg K ha~(-1)) indicating the need for upward revision of the present recommended 40 kg K2O ha~(-1) in hybrid maize production. The B : C with recommended fertilizer use was 2.70 followed by enriched (2.09) and conventional FYM (1.62).
