Technical efficiency of contract broiler farming in Karnataka.

Efficiency of production is important to drive any industry and more so a commercial industry like poultry broiler production. This study was carried out on sample farms in Bangalore, Mysore and Kolar district. In all 64 farmers were interviewed and data on their production details was collected. A frontier production function was fitted to the data with output as the dependent variable and several inputs as independent variables. The results revealed that family labour coefficient with a value of -0.0001 was over used and mortality adversely affected the production. From the frontier production function, the levels of technical efficiency were derived. The average efficiency was estimated to be 42 per cent. The variables like age, experience in poultry and use of family labour adversely affected the efficiency of production. Use of hired labour and size of stock had a positive influence on technical efficiency.
