Some of the most infamous and deadly infectious organisms known to mankind-such as those that cause African sleeping sickness, malaria and syphilis-are able to evade the human immune system and maintain long-term infections that are difficult or, in some cases, impossible to eliminate. These organisms avoid immune destruction by systematically altering their surface molecules in a process called antigenic variation.
