This past summer I made a trip from my hometown of Chicago to Ames, Iowa for a wedding. My graduate school alma mater is Iowa State University, so I have made that trip back and forth many times in the early to mid-2000s. During the drive, I was struck by the number of gas stations closed for business on the sides of the interstate. Although I didn't have a strong connection to any that were boarded up, I had remembered stopping at a few of them in an earlier time, and on this trip, it made me watch my gas gauge a little closer. Upon return back home, I watched the gas station down the road from NPN's Park Ridge, Ill. editorial office close down.
