Rose alternative to red and white meats: Intensive meat production with cattle

Rose meat first appeared in the Netherlands as an alternative to the more expensive white veal and later as a substitute for cheaper beef. Meanwhile, the EU has recognized it as a specific market segmentIn the mid-1980s, some Dutch producers of white veal tried to reduce production costs by replacing a part of the expensive calf milk replacer with cheaper feed. The resulting darker coloured meat was called rose veal. Rose veal calves were sometimes slaughtered at a little older age than white veal calves.
