Regulating E-cigarettes: A rule proposed by the FDA aims to extend authority to E-cigarettes, other tobacco products

In April, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed a new rule to extend its authority to regulate a wider variety of tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes (E-cigarettes). Many in the tobacco control community applaud the rule and call it an important "first step" in addressing concerns about these products. "We have to know a great deal more about what's in these products and how they affect people," says Ellen Gritz, PhD, chair of the department of behavioral science at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. "We don't know what harms they may cause, or whether they will be a good substitute for combustible cigarettes."
