Rolling the dice on feed quality every time you buy fodder and grain could have major impacts on your business. Knowing how to gauge feed quality and not leave it to chance is key to taking the risk out of buying feed. Whether it be hay, silage or grain, knowing how to judge value for money and quality when buying feed will take some of the pain out of feeding stock. When assessing a feed to buy (or sell), the first thing worth checking is its physical quality. What does it look like? Is it too wet or too dry, too fine or too coarse? Does it have an unusual odour? How does it compare with the applicable feed purchasing standards? (see Table 1).
