Reporting from his post in Washington DC, Meat and Livestock Australia's regional manager — North America, Scott Hansen, explains to Farminu Ahead the impact the US recession is having on Australia's beef exports and what MLA is doing to carve out new opportunities for producers. The strong Australian dollar and higher shipments to other markets have returned the total volume of Australian beef and veal exports to the United States to 26 per cent, or 176,192 tonnes in the year-to-date to November 2010 — the lowest in five years. This has left many US importers of Australian beef wondering where all the beef is. The short answer is, thanks to the US recession, it's in Australia, Asia and Russia.
