In this first of a series of articles on the contributions of legumes to farm productivity, the factors that influence the amount of nitrogen legumes fix are explained. Future articles will look at what happens after the nitrogen is fixed, and the other impacts of legumes on crop rotations. An investigation into the overall impact of legumes on soil nitrogen and the associated benefits for following crops has found that existing nitrogen budgets could be underestimating the total amount of nitrogen legumes contribute to the soil.
