Intraruminal supplements

Intraruminal supplements are an Australian innovation. Understanding that the ruminant digestive system includes a large fermentative chamber (the rumen) and that only small digested particles can escape this chamber, provided the inspiration to produce supplements that would remain in the rumen and function during a prolonged period. The first intraruminal supplement was the cobalt pellet, produced and tested by CSIRO scientists Dewey, Lee and Marston in South Australia during 1958. CSIRO scientists were also responsible for the selenium pellet (Kuchel and Buckley 1969).
