Seeing BMW's new X5 on cafe strips nationwide will be like seeing the bulky kid who gave up a shot at the big leagues in order to play social-grade footy. A huge disappointment, because like that kid, the X5 is capable of so much more than it'll ever be put through. And you can blame its new glittery looks for cementing it as the perfect Toorak or Point Piper driveway accessory. This third-gen X5 has been redesigned from the floorpan up, but you might need to squint to notice the bigger chromed 'kidney' nostrils and sleeker profile as a result of growing 29mm in length and two millimetres in width and shrinking three millimetres in height. It carries a similar physical presence to its E70 predecessor, with which it shares the same platform and wheelbase, but looks classier and more evolved.
