Early detection and a timely insecticide application are the keys. Serious budworm infestations show up each year in some tobacco fields. The adult, or moth stage, flies on calm nights in mid- to late June.They are attracted to the largest tobacco around so they hit the earliest set fields hardest. Female moths glue single eggs to the lower surface of bud leaves. This results in randomly infested plants over the field. After hatching, the small budworms may first feed on the leaf and then move to the bud region. They will remain there eating for 21 to 25 days.
