It says something about our culture when an annual comic book convention draws 30,000 more people than the United State's largest biyearly manufacturing show. By the time you read this, about 91,000 people have tramped the floors of the International Manufacturing Technology Show held in McCormick Place in Chicago. Ninety-one thousand, that's a lot of people. More than enough to fill a major National Football League stadium to standing-room only. But, another recent show drew about 30,000 more people than that; Comic-Con 2008, held in San Diego, pulled more than 129,000 people. The lines at the concession stands must have been hours-long. For the non-Fanboys reading this, Comic-Con is an annual gathering of comic book, movie, TV show, and toy producers "dedicated to creating awareness of, and appreciation for, comics and related popular art forms."
